Standard 1: Use of Information and Ideas
School library media candidates encourage reading and lifelong learning by stimulating interests and fostering competencies in the effective use of ideas and information. They apply a variety of strategies to ensure access to resources and information in a variety of formats to all members of the learning community. Candidates promote efficient and ethical information-seeking behavior as part of the school library media program and its services.
Reflection
Capturing the attention of today’s student is a difficult task. Students are constantly bombarded with information from all directions. Whether it is the cell phones they carry constantly, the computer at school, the computer at home, television, internet, friends; they constantly are reminded of the complicated and sometimes overwhelming technological world that we live in. It is important as educators that we instill in our students a desire for education. We do this by involving their interests into instructions as well as teaching them the most effective methods for information search.
I feel that the work I have undertaken in my classes throughout the program has helped instill in me a thirst for lifelong learning. I have learned so many new tools and methods for delivering and enhancing instruction throughout my coursework. I learned also that it only takes one question to open up a dialogue between colleagues. There were times when I struggled with developing standards based instruction as my background is in Finance and not Education. I learned that there are always people willing to help you in your journey and that no question is ever too silly to ask.
The rigorous coursework I experienced helped foster a desire for reading. Several classes helped me get back into reading for pleasure as I was challenged to find books that had been challenged. I enjoyed searching for books using the tools introduced in the courses. I also feel that learning about these tools has helped me be a better teacher and will ultimately result in my students having a deeper understanding of the concepts taught in my class.
While developing my personal learning network, I encountered many resources that explore various strategies to ensure access to information for my students. I have been able to incorporate many of these strategies in my classroom instruction to promote ethical information-seeking on behalf of my students. I am looking forward to becoming a media specialist and incorporating these strategies into my media program.
