Key Assessment: Information Literacy Plan

Reflection
The Information Literacy Plan was one of the first major assignments where I worked with a classroom teacher. The fact that I worked with a teacher was not stressful but the fact that I played the role of the Media Specialist placed a particular kind of stress on the whole situation. I was very nervous at first, stepping the in the territory of another classroom teacher to help them develop a unit that payed particular attention to information literacy skills. I found that Mr. Jarrell was not only happy to have my help but commented that the project really expanded the scope of the assignment and helped his students learn valuable skills that they applied to other assignments. I really enjoyed developing the unit with Mr. Jarrell and look forward to collaborating with other teachers in a similar capacity when I become a Media Specialist.

Reflection
The Information Literacy Unit was an exciting project to work on. I teamed up with an Anatomy & Physiology teacher at my school to develop a unit on the skeletal system including a virtual dissection activity. The teacher explained that it was often the bones the students had the most difficult time exploring in a dissection because of the time it requires to remove all tissue from the bones. I developed a fictional company, SciTech Corp. and created a website that students could explore to check out various virtual dissections that allowed students to more closely identify and explore the skeletal system of different animals. Students really enjoyed the website and further were able to create an infographic of the skeletal system that enhanced instruction by allowing students to use the internet to explore different animal skeletal systems. Students developed information literacy skills during the project and found new ways to explore information on the internet. The teacher responded that assessment scores improved dramatically from previous units and wanted to develop more activities similar to the SciTech website to help students become interested in virtual A&P resources.
