I believe that the Media Center is the true hub of learning in any school. It is the place where students come to learn about their world. Students can find books to read for pleasure, books for research and informational books that help broaden their horizons. The technology available in the Media Center is also an important part of the learning hub. In the Media Center students can access the internet which opens up an entire world of knowledge with billions of web pages. The Media Center is also where the media specialist works; a person who can be a great asset to the student in their exploration of all that awaits them in the media center.
The media center is also a place where teachers can access numerous resources. Collaboration with the media specialist should be an integral part of all instructional planning. The resources available to teachers can help deliver instruction and deepen student understanding in ways unparalleled to any other.
Students should have open and free access to information; intellectual freedom is an important part of the role of any media center. Individuals have the right to unrestricted access to both seek and receive information and the media center plays an important role in granting that access. The internet is a great resource to students and should be accessed openly by them. I believe that it is our duty as adults to teach students the most effective ways of searching the internet and discerning what constitutes a reliable source of information.
