Candidate as Information Specialist
Key Assessment: Collection Development Plan
Reflection
I recall having a difficult time learning the Surpass software when I originally working on the Collection Development Plan. The Media Specialist in my school was an incredible resource. He was extremely patient and navigated me through the software. We decided to take a particular look at the personal finance collection of the library. I was excited to learn about resources available to the classes I currently teach.I also found that there were outdated resources that needed to be weeded. One of the most challenging aspects of this particular project had to be finding resources for the collection. I wanted to ensure a good mix of media from eBooks to print material. In the end the assignment taught me a lot about time management and the analyst side of being a media specialist that can sometimes be overlooked.

Task 1: Reference Collection Evaluation
|
Reflection
The Reference Collection Evaluation assignment gave me an opportunity to look at a specific part of the reference section of the media center. I learned a great deal about the collection, including that fact that it was fairly old. After reviewing the collection and discussing it with the media specialist, she decided to get rid of two sets of Encyclopedias. I was excited to see that she had become enthusiastic about weeding the outdated material. I chose to look specifically at math resources in the collection and found resources that could help supplement the collection and bring it up to date.

Task 2: Ethical Uses of Information

Reflection
I had a lot of fun building the website for the ethical uses of information assignment. My students have a difficult time deciphering whether or not they have engaged in plagiarism. They may believe that they have successfully paraphrased someone's work or cited a source properly only to find out that they have failed to fully disclose the source of the original information. Students that have seen the website find it a great resource to learn more about ethical uses of information. I have had teachers comment that they are using the site in their classes when they start research assignments to have students go through the games and links to help them explore the dangers of plagiarism.
